| The sun cast a warm light over the town of Springvale as it rose, promising another hot Summer day. From the thick stone walls, an incoming traveler would think the town looked large, something worth protecting. This wasn't entirely true. While yes, Springvale was a fairly important town, that was only due to the trade caravans that passed through every few weeks. Otherwise, the town was in fact fairly small. Most of the buildings were nice, some combination of stone and wood. They hadn't taken any more wood from the surrounding forest than they needed to build the town, so that from a distance Springvale was almost entirely obscured by the trees.
At the moment there was a caravan in town, doing some minor trading and restocking before they continued through the forest. They had arrived the day before, and would probably be leaving the next morning, before it got too hot. In the meantime, there were trade carts parked in every alleyway. Anywhere to stay out of the sun. They were inhabited by every creature one could think of. There were even a fair number of humanoids, which was odd, considering how far south the village was.
Most of the town was just waking up, or even still asleep, but Kader was just returning to his house, eyeing the rising sun with his pale yellow eyes. He didn't much like the heat, but that was probably because he generally refused to take his black cloak off outdoors.
He passed a back alley with a small feline, marked like a cheetah, sketching on the ground. He nodded politely at her, but she paid him no mind. He shrugged. She was one of the locals, known for her skill with the feline magic, runes. He saw several trade carts in the area too, some still silent, some already hawking their wares. The place would be very busy in a few hours, and Kader knew the noise wouldn't stop until late into the night. He spotted a young kirin struggling to carry a large pack of food back to its cart. He caught the kirin with a cold stare for a moment, then walked away, chuckling at its expression.
He came to his house, and gratefully opened the door, ready to get inside for a while before the streets became too chaotic. He stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind him. There was a small table just inside the door, and he stopped by it. He took his pale, curved dagger from it's holder on the inside of his cloak, and placed it on the table. Then he dug through his pockets. After a moment he drew out a small, silver statue.
He examined it for the first time since he had acquired it. It was only a trinket, not magical as far as he could tell. One of many small statues in the caravan he had taken it from. It depicted a bird, very ornate, possibly a phoenix. It probably wasn't pure silver, but it would still be worth some amount.
Kader placed the statuette carefully on the table next to his dagger. Then he shed his cloak, revealing dark gray scales. They were dull, not reflecting the light well, and his underbelly was a shade lighter. He hung it up on a hook by the table, and walked into the other room.
His house was small. In fact, it only had three rooms. The entryway and living room, the kitchen which was also storage, and his bedroom. Well, he also had a bathroom, but that didn't exactly count. He entered the kitchen and began looking for something to eat.

| Aiko yawned as she strolled into Springvale. She had slept a few miles away from the town that night in her normal kitsune- or fox- form. She would have slept in the town at some inn if she hadn't been just SO tired. Then she had woken up early and hunted for breakfast, still in her kitsune form. She even caught some extra animals to trade with some merchants for some quick cash. Now she was at Springvale in her human form.
Aiko walked down the streets looking at various stands that were already opening. The only features that proved her not to be human was the orange fox ears that seemed to twitch with every loud sound and her orange tail that swayed from side to side. Aiko sighed as she leaned against a building's wall and sunk to the ground, rubbing the temples of her head with her thumb and index finger. Maybe she shouldn't have gone to sleep so late and woken up so early. Then again, she could be one of the first "hunters" as they were called by humans to bring in some food to trade. Kitsune glanced in her bag at the two large dead rabbits. Not much caught, but she could still make an acceptable amount.

| Desiderii settled into her daytime form as the first sunbeams streamed through the leafy canopy above her head, and touched the earth with their golden light. There was very little noise in her transformation, merely a faint hissing as she shrank slightly, and her hide grew lighter in color. Her tail and hooves stopped giving off a misty darkness, and instead nearly faded from visibility. Her sharp teeth flattened and dulled, and her eyes ceased their unearthly glowing. Chains sprouted from the air and wrapped around her midsection, thus completing her transformation from Night Mare to Pooka.
The woods weren't quiet anymore, like they had been during the night. Birds chattered and sang, adding to the cacophony of buzzing insects and fighting squirrels. Especially the magical kind that had magnified voices to better convey their displeasure.
Desiderii knew the town wasn't far off- she could see the wall through the treeline, and she had just been there a mere hour earlier, in her nighttime guise. It was time to return for the day, to observe those that she visited in the night with bad dreams.
Desiderii was curious as to why certain people deserved certain dreams. It was because of this that she wandered around unobtrusively to gauge people's morality. It was her version of people-watching, and she enjoyed it greatly.
Besides. Who wanted to wander the woods in their most vulnerable state? The town really was a better option until night came again and she could go wherever she wished.

| As the sun rose, an enormous, looming creature slowly plodded through one of the gates marking an entrance to the town of Springvale. To those who saw him from a distance, he appeared to be a lone, riderless horse, not wearing a saddle, nor hitched to any cart. However, as he drew nearer, his features became more clear, and it was obvious that he was not a horse. With the appearance of a Shire, he was gigantic, standing at least nineteen hands high, and by far surpassing the height of the horses hitched to carts in the trade caravans. His pelt was a slate grey, and dark scales swirled over his flank, lower legs, and over the front of his face and around his muzzle. His mane and tail were both a bright shade of silver, and his eyes were a dark shade of brown, almost black, and seemed to leap like fire. This is not the strangest feature about him, however, that draws attention. His lower legs, where feathering fur should have begun, were encased in glowing blue ice crystals, which also coated his hooves, and spiked out from his mane, trailing onto his shoulders, sharp, and clearly making it impossible for someone to get on his back without being harmed. Finally, what marked him for what he truly was, was a long, glowing blue ice crystal that sprang from his forehead, razor-sharp, and shaped like a scimitar blade.
This stranger was a unicorn stallion.
Rarely seen by other races, unicorns kept to themselves, and stayed far from places where towns were present, even avoiding roads, to an extent. Yet, this unicorn stallion, whose name was Edur, was willingly entering a trading location. Clearly, he belonged to no herd, yet he had no possessions with him that indicated he wished to trade for anything, for there was little that nature did not provide for unicorns already. The only object the unicorn had on his person was a simple-looking oval-shaped iron locket, which he wore around his neck and broad shoulders on a silver ribbon. Why he wore it, there was no obvious answer, nor was there a truly definite reason for why he chose to enter a populated area, when he seemingly had nothing to do with the traders present. Perhaps he was just a wanderer, drifting from place to place, seeing the world. Nobody could understand unicorns easily, their ways were strange, perhaps because they simply did not have the same needs as others did.
Regardless, even if he was extremely obvious to residents in the town, as his great size was hard to miss, the first to notice him was always the horses that the traders had hitched to their carts. Many of those that were nearby when he entered the town raised their heads and turned to look at him, their ears rising and pricking forward, and a few even producing small nickers. Edur's response, however, was to lower his ears back, keeping relaxed, though tightening his mouth, as though perplexed. This was always the relation between him and horses, creatures that looked, smelled, and even on occasion sounded like him, yet always failed to communicate. Unicorns around horses made for an awkward situation, as it sometimes felt tempting to speak to them, but there was no possible way for them to interact. As a result, Edur simply nodded his head, and flicked his tail, body language to acknowledge the horses, which seemed to satisfy them, as they returned to whatever posture they had been in before, lowering their heads and staring straight ahead, or returning to their troughs of water or hay.
Edur would stay for a bit near Springvale, and then he would move on to the next town. Traveling alone did not bother him, nor did he fear thieves that were sure to wander about any trading location. He was big and strong, even without magic, and could freeze a foe solid, if he needed to. Even then, what thief would seek to rob a unicorn such as him? He had nothing to steal. So it was, that he gazed at the trader's wagons, filled with many kinds of trinkets, with a kind of amusement playing on his equine features. What was the value of things? Edur could understand people living in a house, for it made perfect sense. Regardless, if a house was only meant to be a place where one slept at night, what was the need for shiny little things, which would just clutter it, and gather dust? One would see them, and forget they were ever there. Even so, the traders amused him, going about their days, determining the value of things they could trade for other things. Everyone had a different definition of value, but it seemed that a Unicorn's wants and desires were rather simple, compared to others. It was this simplicity that made entering towns interesting, for the society Edur found was fascinating to observe.

| Terran let out a soft sigh as the trees began to thin around her. This hopefully meant that she was getting closer to a town. She had long since lost her map, so had been just wandering from area to area hoping to run into another town. It had been awhile since she had restocked on supplies and she was running rather low on food and other necessities. Terran was hoping that she would never get so low as to eat grass, despite being half equine.
Soon she had broken through the line trees, finding herself at the entrance of the small town. She was hoping it would at least have the basics for a price she could afford. It was rather early in the morning, so Terran slipped inside the towns interior without much attention being called to herself. She walked through the town, trying to keep her hooves from making too much noise on the rocky ground.
She felt like a bit of a mess at the moment, having woken up early to continue walking and being without food for a few days. Terran glanced around at the many vendors setting out their wares, Trying not to wince at the hunters latest and freshest catches. Maybe she would find something a little greener to eat.

| Kader pushed open the shades of the small window in his kitchen, letting light enter the room, and allowing him to watch as business picked up in town. He scrounged around his 'fridge.' It was pseudo-magic he had bought from a caravan several years ago, he only had to exchange the power crystal occasionally. Usually he simply had it recharged by one of the felines in town, since they were the best at non-elemental magic.
He found... Nothing. No breakfast.
"Amech..." Kader muttered under his breath, wishing something would burn. He closed ice chest and walked back to the entry room. He grabbed his cloak and put it on, fitting his hood carefully over his horns. Once he was satisfied with his cloak, he took his dagger off the table and put it in it's sheath on the inside of his cloak. He doubted he would need it, but he refused to go anywhere without it.
He then opened his door and stepped out into the building chaos. Even in the short time he had spent inside his house, business had picked up. He hoped to get some food cheap off the merchants in town, but if he couldn't find anything he could just as easily go to the shop in town. With that thought, he closed the door behind him and went to his shopping.

| "Well why not? These rabbits are by far some of the best of the season!" Aiko glared at the merchant, holding up the dead animals in her left hand. The merchant seemed nervous as he spoke with a foreign accent, "I'm sorry, mistress hunter, ma'am, but I simply don't need any more stock at the moment." Aiko sighed as she flung the animals back in her bag, "Fine," she snarled before turning on her heels and walking off.
Maybe she shouldn't have been so harsh to the merchant, but she was getting desperate. She needed to get some more money if she wanted to stay at more inns. She had enough for one night that she would have used last night, but now it would probably be for an emergency stay. Aiko glanced around the various merchants. They mostly seemed like not the type to trade for food. There was always the option of selling directly to someone. As much as she disliked it... it was a good idea. She didn't have any stand, but it would be fine to just approach someone, right?
Aiko's right ear twitched as she approached Kader, who was the first possible buyer she saw. "Would you like to buy any game?" Aiko held out the two rabbits. She looked at the ground, trying to keep her expression which showed discomfort in asking such a question to a random passer-by hidden.

| Kader turned to face Aiko, quickly taking in her features. Humanoid, but a fox, perhaps a shapeshifter. He looked at her, his pale yellow eyes almost the only thing visible under his cloak, and spoke.
"I would," he said simply, calmly, "what do you have?"
He would never pass up a chance for fresh game, especially from this traveler. She didn't seem to be with any of the carts, which meant she would probably sell her catch cheaper, another thing he would never pass up. Quickly, he went over how much money he had. Several bronze pieces, and three silver. That should be enough to buy food, if not a whole lot else.

| Upon returning into town, Desiderii took in the new sights and smells of the main marketplace. She had frequented this town enough times in her life to know traveller from resident, and there certainly were an abundance of travellers today. It was not the wanders she was interested in though.
While last night had been a normal night for the dream patrol, the upcoming night was not so certain. Desiderii knew there were many nightmares schedualed for the upcoming night-- It seemed like there was one for every person in town! She sighed mentally, realizing she would be busy later. She pondered this for a moment. What was it about this town that brought so many nightmares to the minds of its denizens on this single night? Desiderii felt that there was something causing the residents to have darker sub-conscious memories reworked into terrifying experiences during their sleeping hours...but what?
Ah, Nightmares.
As a Night Mare, dreaming was Desiderii's buisness. She knew what caused dreams in a normal person. She knew how to cause magical dreams. So why was this town going to be the recipiant of so many negative, unnatural magic-made terrors? Idely, Desiderii wondered if Ranah would know, and elected to ask the next time she saw the goddess, if she didn't figure it out for herself by then.

| Aiko held back a smile. Yes! This cloaked...is he a raptor?-was willing to buy. She held up the two large rabbits, "I just need some money for one night's stay at an inn. I am willing to sell them cheap, as long as I get enough for one night." She cast an annoyed glance towards the caravan area, "Everyone THERE is either not buying or those buying aren't open yet. I don't get why someone who trades for food wouldn't be open by now, though. Fresh game usually arrives in the morning." Aiko realized she was getting off topic and turned back to Kader.
"Sorry," she frowned, bowing real quickly. It was a normal gesture for kitsune to do so, but Aiko was unsure if it was common in the current town. Either way, she was hoping that Kader would see her as respectful and be even more willing to buy. If he ends up saying no... Aiko decided she would try not to let the situation with the merchant happen here.

| When the first rays of streamed in through the window, Lilith knew her stay was at an end. She reassumed the guise of a six foot male hare, under which she rented the room. A quick look in the mirror told her all was in order, so she threw open the door and bounded down the stairs. The innkeeper looked up in amusement at the sight. Her rabbit feet were much too large for the steps and she had a hard time not falling face first. I should have chosen a more wieldly form. Well at least I won't be perceived as a threat. Despite this she still felt a deep loathing towards the creature behind the counter. The urge to show him just who he was dealing with was like an unquenchable thirst. She forced out a buck toothed smile as she hoped right out the door. "Aren't you going to eat?" he called after her, but she didn't so much as look back. Lilith felt no hunger, or much of anything else for that matter. In fact the only reason she bothered with a room was not to be suspicious. She had spent the whole night brooding over what the day might bring, and what she anticipated wasn't pleasant. For the locals that is.
Lilith tried to look natural as she bounced about the bustling marketplace. Then something caught her attention, a transaction between vendor and perhaps a traveler. A dark grey raptor and a humanoid with fox ears and a tail to match. The fox person was holding up two dead rabbits. Normally this wouldn't mean anything to her, but right now she had a persona to portray. The hare froze just behind Aiko, his eyes transfixed on the lifeless forms of his less evolved kin. Across his face was a look that could only be described as pure horror. This didn't last long, as he fainted a moment later. If Lilith had learned anything from her years of espionage it was the right type of attention actually makes you less suspicious. That was also true in this case. Nobody would suspect a delicate old rabbit of anything.

| Kader inclined his head slightly, returning Aiko's bow in a much less noticeable manner. He smiled just slightly. The rabbits were clearly fresh, which was even better. He was about to make an offer when he noticed a small commotion behind Aiko. A large, sentient hare seemed to have spotted his dead kin and fainted. Kader rolled his eyes. It wasn't as if carnivores were rare in Arcan, and anyone stopping in Springvale had to have been all over the place.
"One moment," he said, stepping casually past Aiko and stopping in front of the hare. He kicked it gently with one clawed foot, being careful not to actually scratch it.
"Hey," he spoke, raising his voice slightly, "get up."
He really couldn't care less what happened to the hare, but he was a (tentative) member of the town guard, and he definitely didn't want this lump laying in the street. He stared coolly at the unconscious hare, waiting to see if it would respond.

| Aiko turned around to see who Kader was talking to. A giant... rabbit. "Are you kidding me?!" she yelped, anger evident in her eyes. Why was Kader trying to talk to it if it was passed out? Then she realized why. If this giant rabbit actually had a life in town (or had ever been to a town, at that) it would be used to seeing dead rabbits, wouldn't it?
"I would appreciate it if you didn't try to ruin my chances with getting money to stay at an inn in town," she gowled. "Sleeping in the forest isn't as comfortable for a kitsune as inns. That's why I'm selling these. Or.." a devious smile replaced her frown, "Maybe if you don't get up I can have even larger game to sell, if you get my drift." Aiko was joking, of course. She wouldn't kill something that smart- whether a giant hare or no. She decided to add in to the act, even so, and turned to face Kader, giving him a wink to make sure he knew she was joking. "Don't you think several these days would be willing to buy so much rabbit meat?" she unclipped her knife off her belt and held it up playfully.

| Edur continued to shuffle along, giving nods to any horses that noticed him, before one that he spotted, one that looked different than the others, got his attention. There was a grey Mare, standing off to one side, neither harnessed to a cart, nor wearing any sort of bridle or saddle, a riderless horse. This Mare, though, had an even more curious feature about her, which took the form of chains, wrapped in impossible knots about her body, with no obvious way for them to be removed. She was clearly taller than most horses were, although still far from the same height as Edur, who was now inspecting her appearance with a perplexed expression on his face. After a moment, he realized that the tips of her mane and tail were fading into nothingness, not ending at a prominent point, as normal horses did. This was clearly not a normal horse, and there was obviously something magical about this mare. After a moment, he gave a soft snort through his nose, deciding to attempt to speak to her. If she was a magical creature, chances were that she would have the same intelligence as him.
He slowly approached her, trying not to look too imposing. When he was close enough to speak, he gave a soft nicker in greeting, before proceeding to talk. "Pardon me, Ma'am, for intruding upon your thoughts, but you are not a normal mare, are you?" His voice was the same as his father's, a voice Edur was often told he was lucky to possess. It was a deep baritone, and possessed a strong, raspy quality that made him sound as though he were constantly whispering. What most did not know, however, was that plenty of ice unicorns, regardless if they were male or female, tended to have a raspy voice. It had much do deal with the way their air passages were shaped, made so that they could breathe with ease, even in strong, icy blizzards, in which the wind made simple tasks such as breathing almost impossible. Because of the way ice unicorns were built, they could breathe in bad weather with ease, the voice rasp a side effect.

| The rabbit began to stir one more in response to Kaders prodding. He opened one eye then the other and saw that the fox person was clutching a knife. Lilith was amused, but her character was not. She got back on her feet and cowered slightly before Aiko. Next time I am definitely choosing something more fearsome. "My apologies! Please don't hurt me!" cried the hare. "Back where I live none of us eat meat... after all this time of traveling one look still gets the better of me." By now the rabbit had adopted a tall posture and looked a little more at ease. "If it's a room your after, take this for your trouble." He reached into a small coin purse at his hip and flicked a coin in Aiko's direction. Coins were mostly of value to mortals and Lilth had plenty of momentary to throw about. He started looking a little sickly, and his hand shot to his nose. "Please get your transaction over with!" he said in a nasally tone. | |

| Jolted out of her daydreaming-- this happened quite often --Desiderii startled before realizing that a tall, imposing unicorn was speaking to her. Speaking. How unusual! She took in what he'd said, thinking over how she would respond. She felt awkward, as speaking was physically impossible for her. As a Pooka, not much that normally would be required for an equine to sustain itself had been included in her physiological design. She could whinny and snort like a normal horse, but speaking was out of the question.
"Oh bother verbal speech," Desiderii thought to herself. "Why can't everyone communicate telepathically like a proper being?"
She sent a dreamlet toward the Unicorn in an attempt to communicate. Within the dreamlet, if the Unicorn chose to recognize it, she appeared as a young girl in a gray dress. It was one of her better guises, and she could speak properly with it. Humans. She'd visited enough of them to know that they did have a knack for communication, if they bothered to use it.
"No," said the girl-form of Desiderii in a sweet young voice, "I am not a normal mare. Pardon me, Sir, for intruding upon your thoughts."

| Aiko began laughing when the rabbit asker her not to hurt him. "I was just joking to make sure you got up. Anything with a large enough brain to talk isn't game, in my book." She put her knife away before accepting the coin from the hare. "Oh- thank you very much, sir. I'm sorry to have caused you a fright," Aiko bowed as she did to Kader earlier before turning back to the raptor. "So, uhm... I oncee again apologize, but would you be willing to buy anything?" Aiko looked at the ground like she did earlier, feeling uncomfortable selling the dead rabbits all over again. She was an explorer, not a merchant. Hopefully such a situation won't happen again. Next time hunt a bit later so that more food stalls are open to sell to. While Aiko held out the rabbits she subconsiously fiddled with her star necklace, waiting for a response. | |

| Kader chuckled lightly in response to the whole situation. "Yes," he said, "I have some silver, would two be enough?"
He was fairly sure two was more than enough, but he didn't really want for much money. Besides, most fresh game in town the same time as a caravan was overpriced by far. He was starting to get hungry, though, and hoped he would not have to negotiacte the price.

| Aiko nodded quickly, her fox ears pointing forward in full attention, "Yes- definately," she held out the rabbits quickly. With the extra money, she could also go buy some lunch instead of eating the dried meat in her bag. That sounded like an awesome idea. Her tail flicked from side-to-side with excitement. She was going to spend the day relaxing in town and get back to travelling tomorrow.
"It's a pleasure doing business with you, Sir... I didn't really catch your name. Either way," she nonchalantly nodded, "I'm Aiko of the kitsune."

| The hare just stood by like he didn't have anything else do. Which was for the most part true. Lilith's plan was to blend in until something out of the ordinary happens. She wasn't sure exactly what she was looking for, but she was definitely in the right town. I'll talk to this guard after he's done here. The rabbit tapped his foot and looked about in the meantime. To Lilith all the citizens might as well have been rats scurrying about in a maze, leading pointless lives. They all disgusted her. Born to die. were her thoughts exactly.

| Kader allowed his hood to slip back just slightly as he exchanged his silver for the food. His face was somewhat more visible once the sunlight could actually get to it, and that revealed his calm smile.
"Thank you," he said, then added on, "my name is Kader."

| Aiko smiled, "Well, it's nice to meet you, Kader." She looked around. It was still morning, and staying in the town for the day was her plan, so... what exactly could she do, now? Aiko sighed, turning to look at both Kader and the Hare.
"I'm sorry to bother you any more, but do either you know of any places around here known for entertainment? I've decided to stay here for the day before I get back to travelling."

| "I'm afraid I do not." replied the rabbit. "But I am also in need of something to do as well." he turned to Kader. "surely you must know of something?" Unless the town had a colosseum lilith doubted that whatever this blight on the land could offer her would be of interest. She didn't see the villagers as fans of bloodsport. How unfortunate. Nonetheless she waited to hear what he had to say. | |

| "Well," Kader said, "we do not have anything in particular permanently, however..."
He took a moment to think. There was a caravan in town, which meant plenty of opportunities to earn a little extra cash, and not just by selling things. Performers of music, dance, acting, and sometimes even painting or drawing, would always wish to do their own jobs. This had started one of the town's more important traditions.
"Ah, yes," he continued, "each time a caravan is in town we have a meeting. Anyone who wishes may come up on the stage and perform. It is at the tavern all day today."
"It is mostly music, but," he smirked, "I will be taking my turn as a storyteller later tonight."
His eyes glimmered mischievously for a moment as he remembered the precise story he wanted to tell. There was a reason he would be waiting until dark...

| Terran had been watching the exchange between the large hare, the raptor and the girl with the ears and tail. Clearly an odd bunch. Although she appeared out of earshot Terran could hear their voices quite well. The conversation was causing quite a great deal of entertainment for the young faun, who had been rather bored up until she saw the hare faint in the middle of the road. It had been interesting watching the three talk to each other, each with their own mannerisms. It was like listening to a highly detailed story. The girl with the animalistic features always seemed to be moving, her ears swiveling about and her tail picking up above the dirt. She seemed nervous and awkward, obviously not a seasoned merchant.
Terran allowed herself a smirk as she leaned causally on the side on a fruit cart, nonchalantly snagging an apple form the unsuspecting merchant and walking off.
