Darkwater

The water, deep under the ocean. A bit of light glistened within the sandy ocean floor. Here was where the city was. An enormous city, and fills with life. Creatures swam to and fro, creatures one might mistake as large fish from a distance. But no, upon close inspection one would realize that this was yet another of the world's beauties. Magical creatures.

Among these creatures, a young mermaid swam. She was beautiful, having long black hair as soft and smooth as a gust of wind, or a gentle current under the water. Her eyes were a sparkling indigo. The upper body of a human and from the waist down she was a fish. A large, majestic fish. Her tail was colored black and glistened with beautiful, soft scales. A large fin at the end. Her tail was muscular and served her well as she swam through many crowds, dodging others and moving quickly. This was Cynthia, a young mermaid.

Cynthia made her way out of her home, an apartment in a large tenement building in the slums of Atlantis. She usually only came here to sleep while she spent the rest of the day out in the alleys, by herself. But she didn't mind. She would instead talk to whatever fish would come her way, but non ever stayed long. She had a special hiding place out in one of the city's less crowded places. A quiet place where there wasn't many buildings, but on higher elevation so that some plants actually grew there.

As she had finally made it to her hiding spot, she landed on a large circular rock she usually laid on. She snacked on some coral on the way, eventually simply deciding that she liked the day so far. But there was still so much time to pass.

There was a rush of water as something sped past a group of small fish. They poor things looked around, startled. But soon they found themselves being engulfed in an assortment of black tentacles. Their lives ending, just a they're raised to the mouth of this strange creature for ingestion. The feminine figure wiped the blood off her face and picked the flesh out from her teeth, looking up at the city. She stood just a far distance from the outer walls, using this time to catch some food.

This being was a strange one. Unlike the merpeople who were part human, part fish, this creature was part human, part octopus. From the waist down she had a large array if greenish black tentacles that squirmed and writhed around, and she loved to use them to strange things like fish. She had elegant greenish black hair that flowed around her majestically, her skin of tan, smooth quality. She had slightly pointed ears under her hair and deep green eyes. Her skin glistened with beautiful fish scales. This was Victoria. A Celaecia. She was nowhere near the comparison of mermaids in looks, as they are the epitome if beauty. But, she was very beautiful for her kind. A few eels slipped from some kelp bushes and slithered around her. She giggled, playfully swatting them with her tentacles as they began to leave. What a nice day.

A mermaid joyfully swam through mazes of kelp among the reef, joyfully playing with the fish that lived there. She was a beautifully bright mermaid, having beautiful hair that flowed around her. Calling the color of the hair 'red' would be a mistake, as it was some form of fiery, maybe even sunset-colored orange that needed its own category if hair color. Beautiful as the sun itself. She had a long green tail, smooth with scales. Her skin itself was smooth as she flowed throughout the water, joyfully going through undersea bushes and happily playing with fish. A happy day indeed.

Away from the light and color in a cave a few miles below the surface a lobster crawled along the grey sand picking up scraps  of food that had floated down from the upper levels it's legs clacking it decided to observe an odd light that was a few feet in front if it. As it's grew claws attempted to close on the curious light it It flew into the cave, just as quickly as the light had disappear a horrible creature snapped its large jaws around the lobster's head making a sickening crunching sound and altogether ending the crustations life. The creature had a massive snake like head and in it's lower jaw a large pouch could be seen as it swallows the lobster's body with one shake of his head.

Then it swam out of its little dwelling the large horrific head seemed to be placed on that of a emancipated man's torso with wrinkled arms with five fingered hand on the tips of his fingers were long gnarled nails. The rest of his body from waist down was that of an eel a long tail in the tip of the tail rested a little flickering lure the same used to capture the lobster, it's old wrinkled
Skin had the look of brown mold.

His name was Hadtrious a hybrid of the dark and the deep seas. His beady black eyes twitched around nervously as he finished his meal he pealed a glance
Above it was still light out to bright for him to hunt. He wonder if he should try to tread near the glowing city he decided better he remembered what happened the last time he had tried to hunt there he was violently chased off by the shark hybrids. Was not fun or good he swam around the enter acne of his cave for awhile before he swam back in.

On the outskirts of the city, a serpentine figure slowly and steadily drifted along, moving just inches above long, emerald green blades of kelp as they grew in thick, grassy fields under the filtered light. Although much like an eel in shape, the hybrid did not move in the same, snaking motion, but rather, swam in a straight line, propelled by fins that ran along the lower half of her tail. Having no scales, but possessing dark, sleek skin that was a grey-brown in color. It was dappled with pale flecks of orange near where the tail part ended, and the human part began, though the entire body was the same skin, no definite spot where human and fish began and ended, as was with a mermaid. The front of her body, starting at the waist, was a bright orange, running up and ending at the chin, though much of this was covered, by a shimmering blue halter-top that was decorated with abalone shell, false scales, in place of the ones she didn't have. Her hair was long and orange, iridescent like a fish's fin, and her eyes, visible because of orange eyelashes, were a bright electric blue.

As she moved at the same, even pace that Volts always had, she had no fear for danger, for nobody dared to threaten such a hybrid. Nobody dared to threaten a creature that lacked the ability to move swiftly, for if it lacked speed, it likely had other defenses other than fleeing. Volts had earned her name well, for as she was startled by a shape that floated past, a bright flash of blue sparked near her tail. She was surely part electric eel, for why else would the fish she had zapped be dead? She turned and watched as the fish turned belly-up, and started to float away, before she reached out an arm and caught it. It was fresh, so she wouldn't waste it.

For Alibe the story does not begin underwater, but above the surface. She was a bit different from other hybrid merfolk. While she didn't need air to survive per say, she absolutely loved the feeling of the sun on her skin and the wind in her hair. And that was what she was feeling right now. Albie was up in the sun on her favorite rock, one that she shared with many other seals and various wildlife. When she first discovered the hidden away little spot, she was nervous about breaking the laws of going above the surface, but all fear was drained when she watched the clouds and sun move across the sky. The rock was in the perfect little alcove, it wasn't a long swim from her underwater home but it was also out of view from humans.

This lead to Albie taking hundreds of trips up here, and never being caught by humans or other mermaids. She had eventually learned the routes taken by both the shark guards and the human fishing boats, leading to perfect gaps of space between her and her favorite spot. While she was a bit nervous if being caught by a human, she wasn't at all scared of being caught by a guard. She would simply make a scene, talk about them taking away her basic mermaid rights, and move on. If worse came to worse there were always new places to explore.

Outside the ignorant city of Merfolk, past where even the shark guards dared to patrol, the colorful reefs of Atlantis gave way a dark abyss. A gradual transition, as life is abundant anywhere the sun shines. But the trench keeps on going down, farther than the eye can see. In it's depths live creatures of unspeakable horror, what surface dwellers call monsters lie in wait.

One of these such abominations, a hybrid named Mal, was doing what he does best. Not too far bellow where the light ends, he sat perfectly still with the exception of his angler. A bright beacon of hope to any fish that happened to stray too far down. Sometimes they were injured, other times just tired. The crevice was too large to possibly hope to circumvent, and that kept his belly full. Sure enough a reef fish lost in the dark was heading his way now. It's bright colors glinted in the presence of his lure. Here fishy fishy. Curiosity, and hopelessness drove it onward, not quick enough for his tastes. "I'm hungry now!" With that he rushed forward, massive jaws open. Like a deer in the headlights his prey sat and watched it's death approach. Running was hopeless without a sense of direction, and it couldn't hope to outpace the predator anyways. One moment it was there, a gulp later it wasn't. I should return to mistress now. The orb extinguished and Mal faded into blackness.

Deeper yet, where the walls came much closer together, there was an opening in the wall. A treacherous looking cave. Around the first bend unnatural bioluminescent plants hugged the floors, walls, and ceiling. Clearly the work of alchemy seeing as nothing grew at this depth, nor emitted light. A dim glow is all it was. Enough for an unsuspecting surface dweller to follow the path, but for a creature of the deep, or half creature of the deep it was homey. Deyanira always found the direct sun of the city above to be overbearing. Of her species most were part octopus. While some do prefer darkness, as a squid there was no question. They are no reef creature, and her particular breed especially. Vampire squid are exceedingly rare, being black make's all the more so. In Celaecia dark coloring signals royalty, since almost all squid are red the ruling house is almost entirely octupi. Once there was high hopes for her, but she threw it all away in pursuit of knowledge.

Eventually the passage opened up into a large room. A crater with jagged edges dominated the center, and hot bubbles rose up from a heat vent bellow. Situated above it was a cauldron of a cooking pot salvaged from a wreck. Sitting upon natural rock shelves were glass containers, seashells and bubbles full of various ingredients live and dead. Deyanira noted that her stock was running low, which would require a visit to the sun filled world of those she despised. She grabbed her trident from it's resting place, a particularly nasty looking weapon with crooked, barbed tri-forks on each end. Where's Mal? Better not be slacking off. We've got work to do.

Victoria moved along the reefs gently, searching for more food. Her tentacles lashed at tiny fish that were legal to eat and she was very accurate and precise with her hunting. She got them in seconds, seemingly like lightning.

Stella still played out in the open through the kelp fields with so many other fish, having a fun time. Her glossy skin glistened and seemed luminous with beauty, and her hair flowed all about. It was at this time she saw a black-haired mermaid approach... Cynthia. And Stella suddenly grew nervous.

Hadtrious shifted through the sand surrounding his "home" searching for some more food as he often did he found a small hermit crab and slurped it out of its shell he then retreated back to his den in it there lay a few dead skeleton of past meals but there was however one thing to note the was a small Wooden box that lay at the end of his cavern it was overflowing with glistening jewels and small yellow gold coins, Hatdrious ignored it to him he could see no value it the box he couldn't eat any of it(last time he tired he'd thrown up for quite a bit) Nor could he use it to lure prey. Then he felt a pain at the end of his tail upon inspection it was a cookie-cutter shark nibbling on his light! Hadtrious angrily pried at the small fishes jaw which caused it to bite tighter he howled in pain then smashed his tail against the wall of his home flinging the little shark off.
