| Var snapped himself awake. He ha heard Mabel, which ha already began to intrude his short slumber. Hearing Kyra's voice made it further. He got to his feet, he made a disgusted face a he smelled the horrid stench. The smell of stale blood and bitter berries. He looked at her and nodded. "We need to get out quickly" he said pulling back a bit of brush in the back of their den to make a secret escape.
"Wait" Taru whispered as he poked his head into the den. He had already been heading their way. Magir, the old lioness who grew up with Snake stood next to him. "I was about to wake both of you, Jali wants the four of us to all go. I know Ridge Pride's camp. Magir here knows more about Snake's past than even you, Var" Taru said. "Now lets go."
"Not without me, you're not" said another voice. The dark warrior, Saber approached. He poked his head in as well. "You'll need my expertise on spirits."
Taru wanted to protest. Var interrupted, "we need all of you. Now come on, lets go!" He pulled back the brush as everyone stepped through. At last he went in himself.

Cyla grumbled. "We'll see what happens, Coglon. Even if I chose to escape, I'll never fall victim to you again!"
Then, a horrendous roar was heard. It belonged to Kavis. It shook the ground, almost to the point that people would fall over. Cyla did fall over, because of her tiny size. Vultures sprang from the bushes and swarmed above Kavis's den, indicating his location and calling for his rescuers.
Moonrise saw it. Aziza narrowed her eyes. "He's over there!" Though Sunset had already blocked off their path from the camp...

| Coglon was almost knocked over by the sheer force of Kavis' roar, but he reacted and caught himself so that he didn't stumble. He slowly flicked his tail, his mind processing that the sound was a signal for an attack, "You are no victim, Cyla, you attacked me first, so I have nothing to be guilty for except self-defense. You have no right to accuse me, because had I not defeated you, you would have killed me, I do not think you had any intentions of showing mercy. Even so, I had no reason to kill you, and would have been satisfied if you had merely fled. That is no longer the case. Now that I am your guard, I am obligated to use lethal force if you try to escape." He said, his voice cool and calm, despite the fact that things were about to become very violent and chaotic. Anyone else would have refrained from responding, but it seemed Coglon just didn't have the emotional capacity, perhaps to feel either fear or compassion in anything other than a logical sense. "If you are wondering why I chose to respond to that, it is because I will not permit you to tell yourself lies, and convince yourself because your situation is bad that you are the one who was wronged. Sunset Pride has been wronged, and it also wronged itself. There is no hope of our oppressors making amends. We will right all the wrongs ourselves, because that is within our power." He flicked his tail.
"With that being said, I am going. I wish you luck, whatever path you choose to tread." With this, he darted away, his paws making absolutely no sound, as he dug hidden claws into the bark of the gigantic ironwood tree where his den was nestled between the roots. He dashed up the trunk and vanished into the leaves, and it seemed that he had never even existed at all. Moments later, however, there was the faintest rustle, perhaps from wind, and a vulture dropped from its perch, which was hidden among the leaves. It fell to the ground, and even at a distance, one could tell the bird's throat had been slit, so swiftly and cunningly, it didn't even have the time to screech in fear or in warning. The hunting of the birds had begun, and many more would surely fall from the branches before the day was done. Coglon would slaughter the precious avian spies that Zalika prided herself on controlling. In the trees, he was lethal, hidden, making no noise at all, slowly but surely the assassin that could effectively destroy the advantage Moonrise had with its vultures.

The roar of Kavis did not just signal the Moonrise invasion, but it also signaled the time of attack for Sunset's allies, who had now gathered in a ring, trapping perhaps the whole of Moonrise forces between them and the Sunset camp. There was an enormous chorus of cheetah yowls, which came from the west, as they exploded out of their hiding places in the foliage, working in teams as they immediately began tackling enemy cheetahs and hyenas from behind, doing their best as they jumped onto their foes to keep their front paws straight, aiming to jab their semi-retractable claws through the jugular vein, which was easily done, when the enemy didn't even suspect they had been there. A few cheetahs, however, failing to pierce the neck, bit down. Some of them managed to kill the foe, but there was the horror that followed, as some of them tasted bitter fruit, and began to feel their bodies spasm. It was not all, but some of them, who rapidly suffered the effects. Kadir saw this, and yowled out, "Their pelts are laced with poison! Do not bite them, Skywalk Pride! Press in, onward until we press them flat between ourselves and our allies!" He had two cheetahs on each side, making his team a total of five, a dangerous force.
At the same time, a chorus of hyena whoops came from the east, as the silver hyenas of Nightstone Clan emerged in a solid wall from the mists, their eyes gleaming, making them all look like phantoms from another world. They did not laugh, but their whoops echoed eerily. They came forth in this way, mesmerizing, until they suddenly all broke into a run, charging their opponents and leaping onto their backs, and then, thinking of the suspicious smell and the pulp on their pelts, throwing them to the ground and viciously bashing them into trees, until important bones, like the vertebrae of the neck, were shattered, leaving their foes dead. "Their pelts reek of the berries of death! Break them, but do not use your fangs!" their dark-haired leader cried, her whoop echoing through the woods.
_______________________________________________
As Kyra dashed with everyone else, trying to get away from the battle so they could retrieve the Stone from the old camp in Kenya, she felt a great deal frightened. She heard everyone screaming something about poisoned pelts. She had to duck several times in foliage to ensure nobody saw her, and even then, she had to hope they ignored their group, but if anyone knew what they were trying to do, they might intentionally want to stop them. The Stone, the thing that when taken had brought a curse down on Sunset, was the key. If they returned it to where it had originally been, the curse would be lifted, and spirits would smile down on Sunset Pride again. Dalmaa would not want that, because while he as a spirit could not be truly harmed, his mortal followers could suffer every manner of hardship possible. Chances were, if the Stone were retrieved, the curse would leave Sunset, and fall right down on Moonrise.
Kyra could entertain that thought, it kept her from losing what composure she had. She was afraid of everything happening around her, but she had to think clearly. It wasn't easy, when she was considered an emotional lioness by all accounts. She was tough, maybe even a bit crazy, but that didn't mean she lacked negative things like fear and sadness. She had to bear everything, and some things even Var couldn't fully understand. She didn't care that Saber would tag along with them, she didn't care if Magir came, either. She either didn't understand the crimes they committed, or didn't witness them first-hand, therefore, she had less capability to summon hatred and dislike. In many ways, Kyra perhaps felt the most sympathy for Saber out of the entire Sunset Pride. She understood mistakes could be made, and knowing her father was one who made mistakes, thinking they would help, was what assisted her thought process. Saber and Ammon were two different lions, but were they really so different, when both had thought they were doing the right thing, when they wronged others? True, Saber had been much more cruel, but still, a mistake was a mistake, and it would have to be forgiven.

| The horrible stench of Zalika grew strong as she pounced onto Zanita, the two rolled down a long slope. Zalika had not covered herself with the berries. Luckily for Zanita. She slashed the hyena in the face and roared in her face.
Moonrise began to spray their opponents in the eyes, almost like skunks. They slashed out eyes and then aimed for the necks. They wicked jaws were powerful and crushed bones. Kavis sat still, waiting for what was next. Cyla remained standing in the prison den, frustrated. She was debating on what to do. Should she leave?
Sunset Pride's camp was in turmoil. Sira was rushing mothers, cubs, an elders to take sanctuary in the royal cave. Layla walked up with her cubs by the scruffs and on her back. She hid inside and looked at Gamba. "You need to go help fight. Kill Zalika. Kill her and they have no spies."

| Zanita was old enough to stay calm in almost any combat situation, and being clawed in the face, so that blood got in her eyes where she struggled to see, was no exception to the rule. She had fought blindly before, and the hyena leader had two advantages. One, was that Zalika was not covered in Deathberries, and secondly, the Jaglioness positively reeked of rotten meat, a smell that was easily detected past the smell of blood. Zanita knew how to fight by smell, and her ears allowed her to tell where an attack was coming from. Even then, she still had a small ability to see, as her eyes teared up and started to wash out the blood. Zanita saw her attacker roaring in her face, which was in reality, only good if your opponent was intimidated by the action. Otherwise, it was an opening for a very brutal assault. Zanita took her chance, and lunged up, twisting her neck around to viciously bite across Zalika's eyes, wincing a bit at the taste of rot on her fur, but knowing that she did not have poison on her pelt of any sort. If it did not completely damage the eyes to the point of blindness, Zalika would lose her sight, just as Zanita had lost hers.
At the same time that Zanita made this brutal move, she kicked up so that she caught her attacker in the upper belly, which shoved the Jaglioness off, and allowed her to regain her footing. The Nightstone Clan leader didn't waste a single moment, while Zalika was off-balance, she rapidly charged her, catching her while she was rising in the side, and smashing her into the side of a tree, before ducking and slamming her paw on the bony part of the lower jaw, to keep her off balance. She hurriedly backed away, letting out a loud giggle to alert others that this was a dangerous opponent.

Gamba's eyes gleamed, and he looked up as he heard the giggle of a familiar hyena. He turned and charged off in the direction he heard it from, bashing enemies out of the way as he went through their ranks. Zanita was in danger, and knowing that she was easily identified as a leader, it would be a stronger attacker than an average fighter who would go after her. He exploded out of the bushes, and saw that Zanita had blood running down her face from a long slash on her forehead, and was backing away from the Jaglioness Zalika. He growled, "You're going to die, for trying to hurt my mother." He hissed. "Nobody kills either one of us that easily."

| Zalika staggered and then her blood-covered eyes widened. "She's your mother, eh?" she asked. "NOW LET'S END THIS!" She jumped forward and threshes Zanita's paws with her claws, tripping her. Then with her hindlegs she forced the hyena down a large ditch, many meters deep. Then Zalika pounced onto Gamba's back, biting the back of his neck and gripping deep into his pelt with her dagger-like claws. Then she reached forward and raked him in the forehead to blind him as well. She caught her hold again, a few vultures landed in a circle around Gamba and began flailing up at him if he got too close to each of their positions. | |

| Gamba reacted immediately, flipping over onto his back and smashing Zalika into the ground under his full weight, which by all accounts would surpass that of the Jaglioness. He then flipped over, and took a single, vicious swipe at her jaw, once again, smashing his paw into the joint, clearly, intending to once again break it so she couldn't bite, and leaving a long gash in the wake of his claws. "You smell like something died, even with my eyes blind I can still find you!" He roared, before, raising one hind leg and stomping it forward into her belly. Being a tiglon, he had inherited the incredibly powerful hind legs possessed by his pure-tiger father, and once he had stomped forward, he ripped his leg back, his hind claws scoring deep down her body. With his other foot, he smashed one of her hind legs, to prevent her from kicking out and getting him. He flipped over onto his back, and kicked her away, sending her sprawling into three vultures, and then rapidly rising to his feet. A vulture snapped at his tail, and he kicked it with his hind leg, catching it in the beak and snapping its neck.
His nostrils flared, as he focused on the shape that he thought was Zalika, based on the stench. He lowered his head, and growled, "I'm going to rip you to shreds." He hissed, the simple threat sounding far more threatening when it was clear he was capable of it. His bleeding tail lashed, and it seemed her couldn't see, but just like Zanita, he didn't need his eyes to pick out where his opponent was, he was capable of tracking her just by scent, because it was stronger than the smell of his own blood.
Zanita finally hauled herself out of the ditch, her ears flattened, a growl in her throat. She looked cut up, and had probably landed roughly, but it seemed that she wasn't done fighting yet. She lunged at the closest Moonrise Pride opponent she could find--a Vulture, and bit deep into it, killing it, and then tossing it aside. She then circled away from the ditch, to ensure that she wouldn't be tossed back in.

| Zalika had managed to dodge much of the jaw offense, allowing it to lack the effect intended. But she was sore where that which did come, had come. She got to her blood-soaked paws and glared at him. "You fodder-face, you're not going to live to see your children grow up. You'll have to watch from the afterlife. That is, if they live through the night themselves. Now you'll learn how I got these scars..." She sprung forward sorely but with enough force to pin Gamba back. More vultures arrived, flapping up and forcing his limbs onto the ground. More and more poured in to suspend him onto the ground while Zalika forced his torso into the dirt. She bared her fangs, her scarred lips wrinkled horrendously. Then with a snarl she clamped her snout over his own, attempting not only to suffocate him, but to tear off the flesh of his snout if allotted the ability.

| Gamba was not easily beaten, especially when much of the assault was useless when used against two fighters, rather than just one. Zanita immediately charged in, ripping vultures off of Gamba's limbs, and crushing their fragile neck bones. She hurriedly managed to free up his right front paw, and that was all Gamba needed. She kept killing any vultures that got close, but was repeatedly pecked in sensitive places, like around her ears. She didn't care, though, because she was determined to protect her son, even if it meant being hurt herself. Gamba rapidly raised up his claw, and despite feeling panicked at the lack of air, kept his mind clear enough to make what was hopefully the right move. Most lions would die from the kiss of death, because they tried to hard to pry off the jaws of the attacker. It wasn't the jaws you were supposed to go for. In this position, the attacker was in the most vulnerable position they could possibly have.
Gamba's single free paw shot up, and his long claws caught her at the base of the chin, but he didn't make an attempt to pry her off. Instead, he dug his claws deep into the soft part of it, and then, in a lightning-quick motion, he raked his claws down the lower part of her throat, slitting her all the way down. His vision began to swim in black, but he kept flailing his limb, digging his claws deeper into the gash each time. If he didn't kill her now, he would pass out from lack of air, and if the suffocation continued, he would die.

| Zalika let go. She stumbled back as blood gushed from her neck. She held her wound with one of her paws, looking at Gamba. Her eyes were watering, tears strolling down. For a moment a glimpse of perhaps a sweet-hearted female seemed to surface through all the visible evil.
Zalika's head hit the ground. Not dead, but nearly. Vultures formed a shield circle around her, just in time for a black-colored figure to tower over her.
King Kavis didn't so much as snarl at Gamba. He didn't have any signs of anger or fury. Or even sorrow for Zalika. He already had cobwebs in his paws and a bit of herbs dangling from his mouth. It was if he knew she'd need them by the end of the fight.
He mended her most crucial wounds first, and with so much expertise that it would rival even Shebla's skills. Zalika looked up at her king with a dazed look. He stood over her body, protecting her. He then looked at Gamba, a somewhat look of anger in his eyes. But barely readable through his dire face made up of shadows.
"You should leave, before I get involved..." He said. He lifted Zalika onto his back, she was already growing unconscious. Then they both slipped into the shadows.
The vultures began flying out from the bushes, what looked like thousands of them. They were so thick it just looked like a black cloud surrounding Gamba and Zanita. They rushed at them at a sudden, ready to attack.

| Gamba's face hurt, and it hurt to wrinkle any of the flesh on it, for the bite marks left by Zalika stung, but he knew he would have to do something to keep the vultures at bay in order to escape. Had Kavis not arrived, Zalika would have died almost immediately from the wound in her throat, he was positive he had at least grazed her jugular vein. At the same time, however, he wasn't able to think as clearly as he normally would have, it was more like blindly grasping, than anything else. There was not a non-lethal way to get out of the kiss of death that he could see, especially not when the vultures were pinning him down to prevent a struggle, and for the most part barring anyone else from assisting. Had Zanita not been present, to kill some of the scavengers, his own survival would have been highly unlikely. Regardless, he would have to reflect on the battle later, now was not the time, or place for it. He and Zanita were both injured in some way, and an enormous flock of vultures was threatening to peck them to death.
Despite the wounds on his face, Gamba opened his great jaws, and let out a loud, ferocious roar. Thankfully, it had the effect that he intended for it to have. Vultures alone weren't that strong, not on flat terrain against a large creature, but in a very large, unified group, they could be extremely harmful. They were, however, not the best fighters in the world, especially not when something unexpected happened. They hadn't expected their intended victim to roar at them, and they all startled, momentarily confused. Gamba took this opportunity, and nudged his shoulder into Zanita, and wordlessly, they both turned and darted into an area where there was dense foliage, exiting the clearing. By the time the majority of the vultures managed to re-organize, their targets were gone, and only about two or three found the hyena and her hybrid son worth chasing. These few stragglers were easily killed, though they did have time to batter the two with their wings.
Eventually, the two arrived in the Sunset Pride camp, looking quite beaten up, and Gamba at first seeming to be suffering what looked like a serious wound, although the blood was not his own, but what had poured onto him from Zalika's throat injury. His face was covered in blood from the bite marks on his snout, and the claws that had been raked onto his forehead, but head wounds always bled heavily, and by now, the bleeding had already clotted and stopped. Both wore grim expressions on their faces, the kind of look most warriors developed after a harsh battle. Even more so if the results weren't satisfactory. They had lived, but Kavis' apparent escape had saved the Jaglioness, when she would have died in any other situation. No matter what sweetness Gamba thought he had seen flicker into her eyes, she was an enemy, and for the sake of his pride, his mate, his entire family, he would have to kill her.
Gamba flicked his tail slowly, and looked down as Mabel slowly walked up, limping on her bad leg. "So she tried to bite your snout, did she? I hope you gave her what-for." She said, flicking one ear.
Gamba took a deep breath, and let it out, reluctant to speak because the skin where the bite marks were stung every time he moved his jaw. "I did, I slit her throat, but Kavis appeared and rescued her. We were forced to flee from the vultures." He said. He then refused to speak any more.
Zanita flicked one ear, wincing, because there was a raw spot where she had been pecked by a vulture, "Why those birds care so much about her, I don't know. They have wings, they could easily fly to where they couldn't be tracked, why waste so much time serving her?" She growled slightly, which was something hyenas did when laughter wasn't enough to express annoyance or anger, "I suppose there isn't any point thinking about such a thing. We're alive, and she will think twice about trying the kiss of death on my son again." She finally said.
She looked at Gamba, and then back at Mabel, "I do not think my son wants to talk much, he still has bite marks, and it hurts to talk when the skin stretches and stings every time he does so. How is the battle going, is it lightening up, or is it still raging? Surely they are wearing down, by now, they're fighting on two fronts!"

| Suburbs was laying with her side wrapped thoroughly in blood soaked cobwebs. She was in the shade of a bush just to the side.
Sheba by now had finished with other patients. The wounded lay stretched out in the clearings of the camp. All of them moaning, unless too weak to do even that. The medical lioness approached with herbs and cobwebs at the ready, likely overhearing the conversation.
"Here Gamba," she said as she applied the herbs very gently and then closed the wounds with the cobwebs. She placed them in strips so he could still open his mouth, rather than just wrapping his about shut like most medicine cats preferred.
"It's an old trick Kamuzu taught me. I used a white herb that I ground into a pasty substance to hold the strips in formation. It keeps them from falling off. Luckily the herb doesn't have any effects to the body, but if inhaled it will give you some bad cramps. It's a good material to use when binding things with cobwebs, especially when dealing with facial wounds." She finished and dipped her paws into a bit of water by the lake to rid them of the herbs. Then with her wet feet she walked back over to them.
"Kamuzu was a brilliant medical lion. He taught me so many tricks that you'd never think of. That was just a tiny thing. Most medical lionesses would tied the snout shut. But there are different methods. Like this one," she said with a sigh, remembering Kamuzu. She took a gaze back up at Gamba. "Layla will want to see you before you get torn up any more. She's up in the cave with the mothers, elders, and cubs. I suggest you go and be with your cubs. You can't fight properly with all of these wounds, and the cobwebs around her limbs will force you into postures and position that will most definitely slow you down. Go rest."
Shebla looked at Zanita, flattened ears. "Yes, he escaped only a bit ago. A few hyenas had desperately made it here and found him. Submits tried to stop them, but Kavis viciously ripped open her side. It'll leave an immense scar. I don't expect her to be quite fit for a month or two. It was close to rupturing her internal body parts. Had it done that, I'm not sure if she would have lived." She said gesturing with her tail to the nearly unconscious lioness. Shebla shook her head solemnly. "That lion must die."
Indeed Shebla was right. If Kavis continued as he did, he would need to be put to death, as he caused so much destruction and heartbreak in so little time. It was as though his very presence in the area promised a storm of sorrow. It was seemingly as if he knew exactly how to tear things apart. Tear people apart. The entire pride's people he seemed to pry at different directions with his claws. His malicious claws.

| Zanita's eyes glinted, "This Kavis, for lack of a better word, is a true psychopath. He feels nothing, not remorse, not guilt, fear, or anger, or we would have seen it in his eyes. A psychopath does not understand emotions except in a logical sense, and that is not true understanding, except to the extent that it would allow him to feign emotions and feelings, to charm and manipulate. Many who lack feelings turn and walk down the path of evil, for it is so easy to turn from good and serve their own selfish desires. They cannot feel guilt when punished for their crimes, so why should they do something, when they do not fear the consequences? Few of them have morality, and even fewer can sympathize with another. I know this, for there was a hyena in my clan born such a way when I was just a cub, and he was killed, for murdering three of our own, and devouring them as prey." Her story and words, to say the least, were chilling. "Beware what this Kavis says, for if he is anything like the monster I think he is, he can lie, and never be caught, because by all accounts his lies will fool even the best at detecting them. A liar without remorse will always seem to tell the truth, although all lies will be brought to light in the end." She flicked her right ear, the one that wasn't nipped by a vulture.
Gamba flicked his tail, "Do not forget there is one similar, but not the same, to what you describe, Mother, who lives in this pride." He said, leaping to Coglon's defense, for he also demonstrated a shocking lack of any emotion whatsoever. The tiglon said nothing else, however, and proceeded to the cave to check on Layla and his cubs. He entered through the cave's mouth, and looked around, spotting Layla, and slowly padding up to her. "I found Zalika, and managed to slit her throat, but Kavis came to her rescue, and Zanita and I were chased away by vultures. We can only be thankful that the injury I caused will be fatal if allowed to rip open, and that Zalika is not likely to show herself for some time, until it seals." He slowly lay down, wincing a bit at the injuries. "Are you alright?" He asked.
________________________________________
Zanita watched Gamba go, and flicked her one uninjured ear, before looking back at Shebla, "I think I know who Gamba speaks of, but what you have just spoken of interests me more. I am a grandmother? Really and truly?" Of course, Zanita was just getting this news, she didn't know she had grandchildren. She looked longingly at the cave, "If I didn't want to interrupt, I would have rushed over there to see them." She glanced back to Shebla, "If I may say so, there is something that deeply troubles you, I can read it in your actions. Will you tell me? If it is anything at all, you may say so, for I see you have been touched by a spirit, and this spirit does not keep any secrets from me. With me, you are at liberty to discuss it."

| Shebla shrugged. "It's over now." She looked as though discouraged to speak at first, but somewhere she could feel her small mind telling her to open up. That voice within one's conscious that urged to what was better. She could feel it telling her to speak. So she sighed.
"I'm just a bit bothered by what's happened lately. Ammon arrived. And he and I grew close." She went on, but now in a more hushed voice. "Ammon's mother visited me in dreams. She set me on a mission to change him. To melt the ice around his heart. To help him understand compassion. I saved his life from Zalika, who tried to kill him while he was weak and unable to fight. But then Kamuzu died. About two nights ago he went out to assist the wounded in a small battle out on the hunting grounds. Azusa arrived and slaughtered him. He returned to me and died. And being my closest friend in all my life... I was just... just crushed." Her eyes watered, but she refused to let any tears fall. "I still am."
Then she squeezed them shut for a moment to soak the wetness up with her eyelids. Eventually she opened them back up. We buried him. The evening of his burial, last night... Aziza arrived with her forces and attacked. She fought Ammon who protected me bravely. I was still recovering from the wounds Zalika gave me. That jaglioness is dangerous. And she's not insane like the others. Not uncontrollably raging or full of fury. She's smart..."
"But anyway, Kavis arrived and ordered Aziza to leave. He spoke his horrid voice. He... He's so cunning and deceitful. He could rob you before your very eyes and make you believe it was someone else." Shebla looked up at Zanita. "Aziza pointed out to Ammon that he was weak because he cared about me. Kavis arrived and his eerie words coupled with Aziza's convinced him... He left." She said sadly. "Just when I need him the most."
It was as though Shebla was in a state that was simply telling herself that everything was over. "I hoped at the time that Ammon and I would have been closer than that. I didn't at first expect him to leave so abruptly, knowing he'd weaken us." Her tail flicked slowly, brushing some dirt on the ground. Her amber eyes looked at her paws sadly.
"Egret tells me that Ammon cares about me more than I know. And I believe her of course, and I'd never doubt her ability to know her own son, but..." she shook her head. "I need to stop listening to myself. But yes, that's what's been troubling me. And ever since I can't seem to focus on anything at all. I'm obsessing over it and it's not healthy. But luckily... it's all over now."

Layla licked Gamba, but behind the ear in an area untouched by wounds. "I'm fine. But you look like you need some rest." She curled up next to him with the cubs by her belly, giving them an affectionate lick as well. "Zalika... We... We'll get her. Eventually."

As Var, Kyra, Taru, Saber, and Magir kept running towards the borders, try had to dodge bits of the battle consuming all of the territories. And soon dark storm clouds began to boom with thunder. They grew black and lightning flickered overhead. Just as the group made their way into the plains, a lightning bolt shot down from the skies and thundered down onto a point in the meadow. It shook the earth all around and nearly blinded them. They fell down from the horrible shaking and their visions were blurry for a few moments. A loud ringing in the back of their ears. The loud sound. Blood throbbed in their ears. The strike hadn't been that far ahead.
Var could have sworn he saw the shape of a large, slender, black-furred figure standing over him and looming down at him with red eyes. But as soon as his hallucination began it seemed to have ended. He looked around in confusion and then stumbled to find Kyra. He was off-balance and nearly blind, seeing only windy colors.
"Kyra!" He called. But he could see the colors of orange and red forming where the lightning struck. He knew it was fire. The smell was terrible, almost smelled like humans as they used fires much. He could hear the crackling of fire, but barely over the ringing in his ears.

| Kyra got onto her paws, and was forced to suffer disorientation, although she could smell smoke from the flames. She shook her head, blinking hard, as the burning of her eyes finally started to subside, and Var reached her. She could hardly hear what he was saying, because her ears were ringing loudly. It was as though an explosion had gone off and knocked all of her senses off balance. She smelled smoke, though, and saw bright hues of orange and yellow licking at the grass. A lot of smoke came from it, as there had been a lot of rain, and therefore, the ground wasn't entirely dry, though it wasn't wet enough to extinguish the flames or stop them from spreading. Kyra's ears flattened with alarm, "Var, it's a fire! It won't spread nearly as fast because it's been raining regularly, but if we don't stop it, there's no telling what it'll do." The wind blew at the flames, and Kyra had to move as she coughed, her eyes watering up. Smoke had blown right at her, she would smell like a human by the end of this. "We...have...to...put it out!" She said, her voice coming back from the brief irritation. "We don't have water, we need something like sand, my brother told me it can be put out with sand!"

Zanita flicked one ear, "I have met this Ammon you speak of, and been told about him by spirits, and it is very true, what they say, that he is a wild and free spirit. He is very powerful, as well, and his untamed energy is not difficult for those with spiritual sensitivities to notice, it is like a large, condensed sphere of lightning, few would be brave enough to venture near it, without fear of being struck." She said, "However, I have been told you can go near and not be harmed, you have the power to control what others have deemed uncontrollable. You, Shebla, have the power to hold Ammon's spirit, and render him helpless at his strongest point, for he would not dare to harm you, even if it meant eliminating a weakness. That is partly why he has left, for he wishes for you and this pride to hate him. If you hate him, you will willingly give up the power you have over him."
Zanita flicked her ear again, "Do not be mistaken, though, that all of his motives were selfish, although many were in his own interest. He would not have left, had he known you could not take care of yourself. He believes you are strong enough to survive without him, both you and his daughter. He could also not help you, not in a weakened state, and even when endowed with full strength, gifted by a powerful spirit, he could not oppose Kavis, who was fueled by Dalmaa. He could have only brought harm to the pride, the way he was, so he saw no point in remaining, no point in being a distraction. He does not believe you need him, and neither do I, for you are all strong enough by yourselves."
The hyena's gaze glinted, "There is also, something else I have been told. Spirits from ancient times, the spirits of creatures that no longer walk the Earth, have begun to awaken from their deep slumber, and now watch over Ammon. These spirits bear with pride scars they had when they were alive, though they could easily be rid of them, as they have the power to change their form. These scars have a strange quality to them, as though left by something that was not of our world. I fear that Ammon has been pulled into something of great importance, for it seems there is a new prophesy spirits cannot even determine, though it is there. It now swirls around him, and the ancients do not speak, for they will not allow the other spirits to intervene, though they seem to know already what Ammon is going towards."

| Shebla nodded. "Yes, Egret told me about the awakening of these... these strange spirits. I have seen one. They are peculiar. But I'm not sure what to make of them. Whether good or evil. I'm sure no spirit could be as evil as Dalmaa, but I'm no expert. Only Ramla could tell you that."

Var pawed Kyra's shoulder to make sure she was there. He kept blinking hard. It went away only slowly. "Sand? Where are we going to get sand?" He said in a loud voice, or he could barely hear himself. He could hear Saber, Magir, and Taru reaching each other across the field, but only barely.

| Kyra, too, was having trouble hearing, although she could tell what Var was hearing, as he was yelling right into her ear, practically. "How should I know?! Do you want this meadow and the trees around it to burn, too?! Unless it rains, or something smothers the fire, it will spread!" She said, a bit of anger and alarm creeping into her voice. The edges of the fire were getting bigger, and it was starting to devour more of the area around it. She did love Var very much, but now was not the time for being calm and gentle. She needed to get the point across, this could end very, very badly, if the fire was allowed to grow.

| The affects we're wearing off at last. Var could now see and hear more clearly, as could Kyra and the other. He could have sworn he saw the black figure pass again within the hearth of the fires. He looked over at Taru who was making his way next to them. Var called over the sound of the flames, "do you see that?"
"The fire?!" Taru asked.
"No, the bl--" he was interrupted as suddenly water poured down hard in a matter if seconds. In an instant he looked as if previously dumped in a lake. He watched as the fires began to drown away, leaving smoke thick in the meadow. It began to choke Var. He made sure Kyra was closeby. But somehow he found himself alone. A circle of smoke around him. He looked around. "Kyra!" He called. His voice echoed darkly. He looked around, panicking. "Taru! Magir! Saber!"
"They will not hear you" said a voice all too familiar. Var turned his head, seeing a pair of red eyes glaring at him through the smoke. The silhouette of the black leopard snakily moved with the fog, in a circle around Var. "You will not make it there alive... I have many obstacles prepared for you..."
"Dalmaa!" Var shouted as he charged at the shadow. It vanished just as air as he struck it. He coughed and looked back around. "Dalmaa you coward! Get back here!"
"A coward am I?" Said the evil voice of the leopard from behind. Var turned to see the figure veiled in black smog behind him. Dalmaa never seemed to show his true form, never seemed to show himself undistorted. Var charged again, this time finding himself on the ground with a throbbing pain in his side. He knew he had been pushed over or... Or just blown to the side. Definitely the second. He felt a sharp pain on his cheek. This one was a cut. And it stung. The shadowy form of Dalmaa looked over him, dangling his fire-coated claws across Var's gaze.
"You fool. You will live the longest. You will see your friends die. And you will realize you've failed... All in good time..." Dalmaa said as he suddenly burst open into flicks of smoke. The rest of the smoke began to slowly clear, Var now searching desperately for the others.

| The smoke, being hot, floated upward, and Kyra, seeing this, crouched low onto the ground, finding a pocket of clean, cool air, though the smell still burned her nose, lingering. "Var? Saber? Taru? Magir? Are you all there?!" She called out, the final lingering effects of the lightning strike now fading, allowing her to focus again. She looked around, and finally spotted their shapes in the smoke, having eyes that were, due to her heritage, made to see with better definition and clarity. In Kyra's opinion, it was normally a rather-useless gift, it hardly ever made a difference, but now, she was just grateful. She got up, and keeping her head low so she could breathe, ran to the opposite edge of the clearing where everyone was heading, dashing out of the choking could of smoke. She looked around, "Guys, I'm over here, follow the sound of my voice, and keep your heads low! There's a pocket of clean air next to the ground!"
As she spoke, it also struck Kyra that she couldn't hear the sounds of battle, anymore. Had the fighting stopped, or were they just so far away from the camp now that they couldn't hear it? She felt her paw touch smooth, churned earth, and looked down to see a burrow at her paws, smelling very faintly of someone familiar. "Mabel's old den..." She said aloud to herself, looking around. Mabel had lived in a meadow just outside the woods bordering the river that divided Kenya and Ethiopia. They had come far, that must be why she couldn't hear anyone fighting any more. In fact, as the smoke cleared, she realized she couldn't smell Sunset Pride at all. "Guys, we're almost to the border, it's just through these trees and across the river!" She called.

| Shebla nodded. "They certainly looked different. I had never seen something like that before." She sighed suddenly as more wounded came into the clearing an laid down next to her. She grabbed some herbs and cobwebs and began to patch them up.
"Horrid Moonrise, look what they've done to us" Shebla said to Zanita. "Turned people against each other. Those hyenas don't know what they've done. They'll regret rebelling. And nobody even knows what's happened to Scar. Her poor mate Feth has been staying here until everything's resolved. And he's such a nice hyena. He truly loved her. I hope she and their cubs aren't dead."
_____________________________
Var looked at the den and then back at Kyra, keeping his head low. But by now the rain had destroyed the smoke almost entirely. But he coughed. He looked at her. "We should be careful. We don't know these lands as well as those that live in the area. So everyone stay close," he said. Saber and Magir slowly and silently gathered to the group and they began walking forward.
"What's that?" Var asked pointing with his tail at something lying under a large fallen tree, though in an open spot by the roots that supplied a small shelter from rain or such. He approached cautiously, sniffing the air. He smelled something, but couldn't quite make it out over the lingering smell of smoke. So he got closer and closer. He slowly padded up, ready to attack if needed. He could have kept going, but this object looked strange and noteworthy. Finally his eyes widened. "It... It's a hyena!"
He pawed at the side of the creature and for a moment figure it was dead. He began to move on, figuring it was just another hyena.
"No" Saber interrupted. "Var... Pull the tree off of it."
Var looked back and with his large muscles began to push the log away. It rolled over and Var pawed the hyena again. Though it's back was turned. With his paw he cautiously flipped it over to the other side and immediately gasped, backing away. Taru had also gasped. Saber's eyes were wide and Magir's jaw had dropped.
The hyena was female. Her right eye was scarred and had a blue film over it. Black strands of hair over the head that were groomed to an attempt to hide the scar.
Scar.
Taru approached. "It... It's Queen Scar!" He said in shock. He looked at Var who was equally shocked. Var stepped forward.
"Is... Is she alive?" Var asked.
"I don't think so" Taru said shaking his head sadly. Var sighed.
"Well what's she doing all the way out here?" Asked Var.
"Running" said Magir. "Running as far away as she can."
"I'd say that's all she has left to do" said Taru. Var noticed that throughout this time, Saber stood awkwardly silent and had a face on that almost looked fearful. Suddenly Var noticed something else on Scar's body... He saw her side move up and down slightly.
"She's breathing!" Var said.
"Var, she's dead" Magir told him sadly and doubtfully. Var shook his head.
"I saw her move. She's alive" he said pawing her shoulder. Magir flicked him with her tail.
"Var, leave her body be. It shouldn't be disturbed" Magir said aggravated. Saber spoke up.
"Var, leave her" he said, as though he wanted everyone to move on as quickly as they could away from the scene. "We need to move."
"She's alive!" Var growled, pawing Scar again. Finally a cough came out of her and her eyes came open. Everyone grew silent. Saber stepped back, a little bit behind Magir and with his head lowered to gaze at the ground.
It took a moment, but Scar finally moved her head to look at them. She didn't recognize them at first. But she saw Taru's face to be familiar first.
"Scar..." Taru said stepping up to her. "It's me, Taru. Are you alright?"
"The Dark King..." Scar said, "took... them..."
"Took who?" Taru asked. Scar didn't respond at first, but then her wounded mind pushed words through her mouth in a slow, weak form.
"My whelps."

| Kyra growled, "He took...your cubs?!..." She could hardly choke out the words, and she was shocked by the blind, ferocious rage that welled up upon hearing Scar's words. She forced herself to swallow the growl, and she closed her eyes tightly, her ears flattening in a look of mixed fury and anguish. "That lion...is a monster...I see no other title for him...Dark King, yes, but he will never be a king of mine..." Her tail lashed, and it was the most anger anyone had ever seen the silver lioness express. She had to tense herself up, to keep her claws from unsheathing, an automatic reflex, given the reaction, that was difficult to fight. "How could anyone be so vile? So evil that they taint the very dirt beneath their paws? Surely Kavis' soul is so black with corruption, beyond any measure, there is not a glimmer of light that can purge the stain of it!" She trembled, and it might discourage anyone from getting near her. | |

| Var debated how he should go along comforting Kyra. Now he figured it wasn't a good time to come close to her. "He is a terrible person" Var said, but trying to do so in a way that was calm. He then looked at Scar. "What happened that night?"
Scar was fighting to stay conscious, but it was obvious she was nearly killed. Her voice sounded full of mucus, and hoarse, indicating that the rain had made her very sick. Not to mention the wounds Var had only just noticed on her, caked with dirt and dry blood.
"They... came into our camp. They... They spoke ag-gainst me... And they started k-killing my body guards. My p-people were not loyal. Then..." She stopped as tears rolled down from her one good eye. She attempted to sit up, Taru helping her.
"I got separated from Feth when the ligeress attacked. I took my children and ran. The black lion followed me and ch-chased me out of Smother t-territory... And he... He... took them from me..." She looked up at Taru. "Taru... What has happened..."
Taru looked sorrowful. Since the drought he'd now seen Scar for once in all their lives become a good person. And now that she'd become so loving as to have cubs, they'd been taken from her.
"Your people are serving under the Dark King's command. They've plagued us for many moons now. Your mate has come to is safely and we've sheltered him until things are resolved, he's safe at our camp" Taru said.
"Feth is alive?" She asked, her eye widening.
"Yes" Taru replied. "He's looking for you."
Scar closed her eye. "Thank you..." She said, but seemingly not to Taru. But to something unseen, perhaps the spirits. Taru helped her sit up more. She was definitely in bad condition.
"What about my cubs, are they alive?"
"We weren't even aware he'd taken them. But I promise you, if they're out there, we'll find them" Taru said. "We're on our way to Kenya, to find an object that may help all of this. You should come. You can't survive on your own anymore."
"I have been living off of rats and birds, on my own. And only the smallest of gazelle that I can find. And even then, I'm starving... I need your help. Let me come."
Taru nodded. He and Var helped the hyena up to a standing position. She finally got her balance and was capable of walking on her own.
She turned around and practically screamed as she saw Saber. Her eye was widened. She looked at her former master with a bit of fear. "S-Saber..."
Saber nodded, looking at her for a millisecond and then back at the ground. Scar stepped forward. "I... I saw you die... What are you doing here, you monster?!" She said with a slight growl. Saber looked up with a repulsed face.
"I feel so welcomed" he said.
"Scar, we can explain" Taru began, "Saber was resurrected by the spirits to help us. To help us understand the spirits more clearly. He's come with is to help is with just that."
"And you trust him?" asked Scar.
"I thought you'd be happy to see me, Scar" Saber said angrily. "And let's not pretend you're not guilty if murder as well. Let's remember that you murdered Layla's sister, Dyna."
"Hey!" Taru shouted with a road mixed in. "That's enough. Both of you. Now we're in this together and like it or not things are going to have to be this way. Because if we fight amongst ourselves we're only giving Dalmaa what he wants. So get vet whatever differences you have and move on. We have a job to do."
He looked at Var and Kyra. "We should probably rest. The sun is falling and we've been moving all day. Plus Scar needs some attention to her wounds and that cough of hers."

| Kyra had managed to calm down by this point, "Alright," She said, before scanning the treeline of the forest, "We'll reach the river not to long after we set out tomorrow, but that's as far as I can determine, I haven't ever set foot in Kenya, it is a strange, foreign place to me. Just be glad I know how to swim very well, but even so, we have to be careful about where we cross, even a short amount of water can rush so fast that you are swept off your feet and carried away." She flicked her tail, regardless, concerned. "I would have thought the temperature around here would have been much, much warmer, but it's actually quite cool. I find that strange, didn't everyone say a drought was happening? I would have thought it would have been incredibly hot, enough to be felt across the forest." With this being said, she walked over to a thick-looking tree, and climbed up it, sprawling out on a branch and letting her legs hand down, like a leopard. "I'm going to sleep up here, for the night, I do it all the time, besides, I'd rather not be on the ground in a place like this." She called down. | |

| Var laid down under the tree Kyra was in. Partly to guard it. The others gathered in the bushes to the side. Though Saber laid alone in a patch of bushes a distance away.
As Kyra began to sleep, she began to dream. Dream deeply. She found herself standing in a meadow made of slick grass colored a strange black. The sky was swirling with thick, gray clouds. The trees were all bare and were black a well.
A female lion approached, flanked by a male. The male had a black mane and green glowing eyes. His pelt was silvery and he had a glowing red slash across his face. The female also had dark, silver fur that was depressing to look at. She had a large yellow splash if light on her forehead and shoulders and several glowing red slash marks across her waist and hindlegs.
Both of them had green eyes. Both had silver fur. They had sad looks to them, expressed especially in their fur. It was depressing to so much as look at them, for they both spoke the very words of heartbreak in their past lives.
"Kyra" the female said in a sad voice. "I am Usizi. This is my mate, Isisulu. We are Snake's parents. And we've come to talk to you about something important. We are here to reveal things that nobody else knows. Secrets that died with their holders long ago."

| At the sight of the dismal surroundings, and the two spirits that had come to visit her, Kyra was already beginning to feel her heart grow heavy with dreary sadness. It did not quell the fire of anger in her that now constantly burned, the one that demanded for the punishment of the vile Moonrise Pride and what they had done, but regardless, it made her ears and tail droop. She was a lioness who carried a heavy burden on her heart, and it now felt as though that burden were crushing her. This sad place brought back so much pain all at once, it was hard to resist the sudden, overwhelming urge to weep. She did not lose her nerve, however, and forced her eyes to remain dry, as she raised her head to look at Usizi and Isisulu. "You came to visit me? I do not know why you would choose me, but if you are here to help me, I am grateful to you. I will not ask you why I am here." She said, her voice clear, except for the faintest wavering note in it.
She slowly flicked her tail, "I will listen to you, it doesn't matter if you are Snake's parents. I don't think you're the same as him."

| Usizi spoke, "we chose you because if we showed Var some of these things, he'd be crushed in heart. You know how emotional he is when it comes to his father. And the sanity of his family."
Isisulu stepped forward. "Lately spirits have been contacting some of the members of your pride in dreams. And it's time we do the same. Now, we first must tell you, in greater detail, how this story began..."
The scenery shifted. The black surroundings darkened into a simple black blur. When things cleared, Kyra was standing in a normal-looking forest. A small clearing with moonlight shining down.
Kyra was standing on a ravine, overlooking the scene. Snake's parents on both sides of her. Usizi spoke first. "There was once a pride known as Firedance Clan. It was the pride our family belonged to. And its leaders were corrupt. We had a rival clan of hyenas, ones that we'd struggled against for generations. One of the most ancient hyena organizations in all of Africa."
A few hyenas stumbled into the clearing, followed by several large male lions. One had a blond mane. It almost looked bleach blond. The male had a huge scar over his lips. Obviously one who had performed the Kiss of Death and somehow suffered only minimal scars. He snarled at the hyenas.
"You little maggots! You honestly think you can take food off of MY grounds?"
"You were trespassing on our territory! You have no right!" shouted a female hyena. The lion pounded forward, scaring the female as she stumbled back.
"Listen, we'll let you be if you just let us go" said a timid male.
"Shush Ismakido! We don't ever back down!" hissed another female.
"You incompetent fools! You have no idea what putrid idiocy you're speaking. These are all my lands. My lands! And you should just move yourselves out."
"Never!" shouted a confident female. The lion shot forward, pouncing onto these hyenas with claws and fangs ready. He began ripping at them and destroying their bodies. Blood flew everywhere. It coated the ground and the bushes with the struggle. At last two hyenas remained and had made a hasty escape. The male looked back at his followers, letting the neck if a hyena drop out of his jaw.
"Get everyone ready. I'm sure they'll have a reprisal soon enough" he said.
Usizi looked at Kyra. "That was the ruthless King Drakis. Who actually is still alive today. Though he once was nearly destroyed. Because of his attack on the leaders of the hyena clan, the leader, the corrupt queen, swore to destroy them all."
The scene fast-forwarded to a different point, showing other beings slip by. Hyenas and lions fought bravely and the landscape moved along with the battle. The landscape moved to a large plain and then stopped. It was a place Kyra may have heard if before. An enormous, leafless, black tree. The Shadingtree.
Lions and hyenas lay dead in the plain. Three hyenas stood under the Shadingtree, looking at the victorious hyena warriors. The one that stood in the middle was a female Kyra would also recognize.
"Smother Klan has won once more! Defeated yet another horrid, disgraceful pride!" Scar shouted. The hyenas all let out triumphant whoops. Scar sneered. "But there are survivors. Look to all the lands of Kenya and Ethiopia. There are several escaping families. Also, King Drakis is still alive. We must end him!" She shouted.
Usizi looked at Kyra. "It was Smother Klan they were fighting against. And they were too blind to see how superior the hyenas were. Smother Klan truly was powerful. Unfortunately, that superpower is no more..."
The scenery shifted again, this time it filtered through a black blur and molded into a rainy savannah plain. This time a family of lions running from a pack of hyenas. The lions however were soon tackled to the ground and slashed at. Kyra would see the past forms of Usizi and Isisulu defending three cubs. A female and two males. It would be easy to guess which one was Snake, as he kept growling at the hyenas while the other cubs were hiding behind him in fear. Sure enough the hyenas ripped through the family, separating each member from the other.
Finally a proud-postures female came out from the struggle and looked at each lion. Her fur was more brownish in color and she had a horrible scar over the right side of her forehead. It looked to be a higher ranked female.
"Thylis, give us your orders" said a male.
Thylis took a thoughtful look around at each lion. Isisulu made a quick move to attack. He tackled Thylis an her guards and threw them at the other hyenas. "RUN!" He shouted at his family. They began to run, but somehow their daughter was snatched away by one of the hyenas and rushed into the bushes. Isisulu chased after, Usizi rushing the sons out of the area before the other hyenas could respond.
The scene fades back to the black surroundings. Both the spirits had low-hanging heads. Usizi looked up. "Isisulu tried to save our daughter, Liabel. But he couldn't. He came back to us that night, having the hyenas gotten away..."
Isisulu spoke up. "The next event was what was so horrible about it all..." He said, his form beginning to shake. Usizi nodded, her face already expressing extreme remorse. The world burst into smoke, shifting and forming into a new world. This time, a small clearing in the woods.
The past Usizi lay with her sons. Isisulu asleep next to her. Snake was awake. The son crept out from his mother's embrace and moved along slowly, as to keep from waking her up. He approached a point where he simply looked up at the moon. His eyes were stricken with terror and sadness.
"I've got to save her..." He whispered to himself as he rushed out of the makeshift den and began running through tall grasses. The landscape shifted and moved along. Usizi was beginning to cry.
"He did what any good brother would do. He went to save Liabel's life..." She said.
