i have a question dose it affect people already asleep like i dont know keep them asleep or something or only people who were awake? also is it neccesary for our characters to be asleep or can we sorta resist it and just be more weakened than usual?

Well this is a plot point so unless your character has a natural resistance to sleep spells (Lillith and Desiderii) then no.
